Look What I Did

I’m really into the damask design.

So I took a picture of my curtain (above), found my favorite crop on the design in Photoshop, traced it and played around with the colors (below 1), divided it in half vertically and horizontally (below 2), printed it out, and free-handed the design with a pencil onto four 12″x12″ canvases that make up the whole image. Then I painted it with two contrasting acrylic paint colors.

Just need to varnish it!

Also, I just hung this frame and wall vases in my dining room. The picture doesn’t really do them justice. Jason says he likes them, but is this too girly?

Fungus Among Us

shrooms close

These just popped up all of sudden in our back yard. They were promptly covered by our tree shedding its leaves this week (yay, Fall!) Any idea what kind of shrooms these are? Do we need to do anything to get rid of them? I have yet to do my homework but I’m guessing they’re harmless.

Late Blooms

These pretty numbers finally decided to show up mid-summer. I think they might be done for the season though. Thanks to Heather M. for giving us the bulbs — they’re gorgeous! I had completely forgotten what they were until they bloomed: gladiolas!

My 1st Haircut

Don’t worry, I wouldn’t dream of cutting Alex’s hair yet!

But let’s be honest, cutting hair is a useful skill when you live with 2 very hairy boys! Lucky for me, my sister happens to be taking a short vacation from beauty school right now and she helped me get the gear I need and gave me a little lesson in Hair Cutting 101.

Jason wasn’t as sure as Sarah that I’d do it right.

Jenna (the babysitter) also questioned my abilities. (What? That’s her index finger!)

I passed! Sarah knew I could do it all along.

A Little Green Is All We Need

Around the House 5 Comments

Last October, our city decided to award our home the Deadest Front Lawn Award. We were told we needed to reseed our yard so that our neighbors wouldn’t get jealous of the lovely dead brown color. We consented to do it this Spring. We didn’t take any good pics last summer after it all died (grubs, fungus, drought, we don’t know why - our back yard was a thriving green jungle!) We even had the Scotts man check it out and he narrowed it down to “any of the above” possibilities - thanks Mr. Scotts man. But we do have pics of the reseeding process.

June 2007 (before the death, but starting to turn brown):

November 2007 (see the dead stuff behind behind the bush?):

Seeding 2

Tilling the dead stuff out: Jason slaved for 3 hours in the rain + a few more evenings of work when it was a little drier - still didn’t quite get rid of all the dead grass…

Seeding 3

Seeding & fertilizing: 30 mins. And no, we didn’t use any top soil or hay…

Seeding 4

Watering: daily in the morning or at night depending on Jason’s mood and the weather. As of today, things are slowly coming back to life.

Seeding 5

We’re thinking we’ll have to reseed some more once the current grass is well-established as there are some areas where it just didn’t grow. You’ve gotta love home ownership!

P.S. Here is a close up of the gorgeous, brilliant blue flower (Lobelia) hanging basket I obsessed about all last summer and bought as soon as they were for sale at a local flower stand:
